If you’ve been in dentistry for more than a minute, then you have seen some serious changes…. Seriously—remember darkrooms? 🙈 I do. We used to huddle around those little X-ray films, squinting like detectives. Now? One click and boom—digital images, clearer than ever.
How about paper schedule books the size of encyclopedias? If you lost that thing, you were basically closed for the week. Now, patients book online at 10 p.m. while binge-watching Netflix.
I even remember learning from the legends—Linda Miles and Lois Banta—how to send insurance claims through the mail: what to highlight, what attachments were required, how to paperclip it all just right. Now? It’s all digital, submitted instantly with a few clicks (and thankfully, no paper cuts involved).
And don’t get me started on software updates. I used to load mine using floppy disks. FLOPPY. DISKS. (If you’re under 35, Google it and prepare to laugh.) Now? Updates happen automatically while I’m sipping coffee and wondering what day it is.
Here’s the deal: AI isn’t the first big change in dentistry—it’s just the fastest one.
And yeah, that can feel a little overwhelming. But it’s also exciting. It means we’re not stuck—we’re still growing.
You don’t need to know it all. You just need to stay open. Just like you did when you went digital, embraced cloud software, or texted your first patient a reminder instead of calling.
Change isn’t the enemy. Exhaustion is. And AI is here to help—not replace.
Let’s stay curious. Let’s lead with laughter. And let’s keep making progress—one update (and maybe one awkward learning curve) at a time.

🛠️ Talking Tech
How to Discuss AI With the Companies You Work With (and the Ones You’re Considering)
We’ve seen a lot of change in our careers—from darkrooms to digital sensors, paper charts to cloud-based systems. AI is the next evolution—but it’s coming at us faster than ever.
As a dentist or practice leader, you’re probably already using AI in some form—even if no one’s told you. Many of the companies you work with (practice management software, phone systems, imaging tools, etc.) are adding AI quietly into their platforms.
At the same time, the dental industry is seeing a wave of new tech companies claiming to be the next best thing—offering AI tools to streamline your workflow, boost case acceptance, or manage your front office.
Some of these are exciting.
Others? 🚩 Let’s just say they don’t know what an EOB is.
💬 Questions to Ask the Companies You Already Work With:These partners may be adding AI into your existing tools—so ask them:
| 🚨 Questions to Ask New AI Companies:(Especially Those New to Dental)Vet new vendors carefully. Even if the tech is cool, it has to work in a dental setting.
|
🧠 Bottom Line:
AI is here—but not all “AI” is created equal.
You don’t have to understand the backend tech—but you do need to ask the right questions.
The right partner will welcome your curiosity and have nothing to hide.

🔐 The Password Problem in Dental Offices
Remember when your password was just your anniversary or your kid’s name? Back in the early days of dentistry (and tech), that was enough. Easy to remember, easy to share. But then… the hackers came. 😅

From "Fluffy123" to Full-Blown Frustration.
Suddenly, we needed at least:
• One capital letter
• One number
• One special character
• Oh—and it had to change every 90 days.
Now, fast forward to today:
Your dental practice might be juggling 10+ platforms—practice management software, insurance portals, AI tools, marketing dashboards, phone systems, and more. Every. Single. One. Needs. A. Login.
And when one team member leaves or you update one password?
🌀 Cue the chaos.
Now you're chasing down who has the latest version, where it’s stored, if it’s compliant, and whether your front office wrote it on a sticky note stuck to a monitor. (You know they did.)
